Churchills Pull Out
Mixed Team
Unfortunately Churchills have had to pull their mixed team out
of the league for this season due to a lack of players. All
mixed matches involving Churchills will be removed from the
results shortly.
Mens Divison 2 -
Claybrooke II 3-3 Hunters II
A
close game between Hunters and Claybrooke, Hugh Potter had a
good match winning his first two games with Nick Smith. Andy
Lees and Jack Schofield had two close games but at the split it
was 2-2. Hugh and Jack took their final game to leave the final
score 3-3. First points for Hunters this season well done.
Mixed Division -
Long Lawford 6-3 St Philips II
This was a test of Long Lawford's experience against the youth
of St Phillips [plus Mark Hope]. In the end experience won out
in an exciting match with some close games.
Mixed Division - St
Philips II 1-8 St Philips I
What a match, exceptional play by all players, with the match
going into overtime, finishing at 10.15pm!!! Well Rob I hoped
you watched this space, we beat you fair and square this time,
but well played!! A brilliant night was had by all, with most of
the team members ending the evening in the Dun Cow.
Mixed Division - St
Philips I 8-1 St Philips II
A
great evening of badminton. The Fowler brothers going head to
head to see who was the better one on the night, unfortunately
for Ian his partner (namely me Tracey!!) let him down, never
mind re-match next week! Watch this space Rob!! An entertaining
night of badminton, played in good spirits as always.
Mens Division 1 - St
Philips I 5-1 Long Lawford
Another great evenings badminton. The standard was very high and
the matches hard fought. 4 of the 6 rubbers going to 3 games.
Ian (TD) Fowler and Steve Sirman fought off a determined Pete
Holland and Ian Masters (A warm welcome back to Ian after a 20
year absence). Pete and Ian taking 1 of the games 16 - 17. The
strength of Ian Gregory and Paul Hilliard showing Andy Chan and
Pete Sawyer how to do it, in 3 games, the decider being 9 - 15.
Again, thanks must go to John Richards for persuading the names
from the past to come back into Rugby Badminton. This was a
GREAT match to watch, and I am sure a hard match to play in. At
the end of the evening, we had 4 of the 8 men injured in one way
or another. Just gives an idea of just how tough this match was.
Overall points on the night, 209 - 187 after 16 games of
badminton. A real pleasure to be part of a Rugby and District
Match of this quality. Well done to all of the guys who played.
Mens Division 1
Hunters 0-6 St Philips I
A
good night's badminton, played in a reasonably warm Bilton
School Hall, for a change. The strength of the St Philips boys
proved a bit too much for the Hunters Team, but, beware mens
league. there was a good fight from David Pugh and Hugh Potter
against Andy Chan and Ian (TD) Fowler. These boys are ones to
watch in the future ! Nick Smith and Peter (questionmaster) Pugh
fought well against Andy and Ian, but the overall strength of
Jamie Taylor and an excellent stand in, Peter Sawyer proved too
strong for both Hunters pairs. Overall, a 6 - 0 win for the
Philips, but I am sure next season will be a different scoreline.
Thanks to Hunters for a very pleasant evenings badminton.
Mens Division 2 -
Hunters II 0-6 Churchills II
This was a tough match playing Churchills first team. Hunters
first pair Simon Davies and Mark Taylor struggled against a very
strong Churchills first pair, as did Richard Box and David Pugh.
Things did not get much better at the split already 4-0 down
Hunters were unable to gain a consolation and the final score
was 6-0.
Mens Division 1 - St
Philips I 5-1 St Philips II
Another good internal game between the best men at St Philips.
The strength of the initial pairings proving an advantage to
Philips 1st team. Jamie Taylor and Steve Sirman dropping only 21
points and Ian Fowler and Andy Chan dropping 19 points. But the
split proved a different game. Jamie and Ian worked very well
together and only dropped 6 points. BUT, the combination of
Roland Pollard and Mark Martin just seemed to work magic. They
took the rubber from Steve and Andy, albeit the games going to
13 and 11 with some hard fought rallies during the games. It is
still credit to the 2nd team guys for an excellent performance.
We look forward to the rest of the season.
Mixed Division - St
Philips I 8-1 Long Lawford
Well, John (the magician) Richards, really took us all back in
time. Do you remember the days when Tracey Masters was the No 1
lady in Rugby and District and Paul Hilliard was feared by all
on the other side of the net, and when Tim (the canon) Deeley
was firing everything at you at full speed. Well, John Richard
did the impossible and dusted down those GREAT's of the court
and bought them out to play. What a night, there were some
fantastic rallies reminiscent of days gone by. All who played
would be struggling to walk for the next few days. It was a
pleasure just to sit and watch. The match was hard fought, very
fair and played with a real "want to win" attitude. Sarah
Richards and Paul Hilliard took a well fought rubber from Janice
Abernethy and Andy Chan, only taking the 3rd game 17-14.
Overall, St Philips won the match, but that wasn't the memory of
the night. It was seeing the greats of Rugby Badminton grace the
courts again. Long may they continue. Well done to John Richards
for his efforts in pulling this team together.

Mixed Division - St
Philips II 7-2 St Philips III
A
great games of badminton again in cold condition. Only one game
fail to completed cause of the time. Well done to both teams.
Mixed Division - St
Philips II 1-8 St Philips I
Well what a return match!! Congratulations have to go to Pete
Martin and Emily Janczak for stealing a precious rubber from the
first team! Ian and Tracey were gutted for not managing to win a
rubber even though they put up a great fight against Andy and
Janice (to be honest with you Ian and I just wore them out for
Pete and Emily!!!!) We were back to sub zero temperatures you
will be pleased to know. Overall it was a great evening, which
finished with Pete buying the team a round of drinks in the Dun
Cow.
Mixed Division - St
Philips I 9-0 St Philips II
A
fantastic match fought hard by all who played, the 9 -0 result
doesn't justify the closeness of the match, where four of the
rubbers went to three games. It could have been 5-4! Believe it
or not, everyone complained about the HOT hall,
most unusual for Bilton School, it was quite surprising as we
were all prepared with several layers of clothing for the normal
cold conditions!
The Fowler brothers put up a hard battle against the first team,
my partner Ian complained that he was rather tired, I wonder
why?!!
A
great night's badminton, which didn't finish till 10.10pm (the
caretaker was in a good mood!). Let's hope the second team can
manage to snatch a rubber from the first team in the return
match, I know I shouldn't say this since I am the captain of the
first team, but it would make me feel good!! |
